Archie was 5 years old when Aurelie began working with him in the nursery. Archie had
complex needs and was finding it challenging to regulate himself in the nursery environment
and staff were finding it hard to support him effectively. Aurelie worked intensively with staff
to model strategies and to create routines for him. She used visuals and simple predictable
routines that included movement breaks. The staff worked really well with Aurelie and
adopted the strategies that she suggested. She visited weekly and offered advice, modelled
group work and made resources as was needed.
Aurelie also met up with Archie’s mum every couple of months and worked on supports in
the home. These supports included helping him to recognise his emotions and strategies to
regulate these. She also provided instruction visuals to support outings and help him to
follow guidance that kept him safe. Moreover, she attended regular CPMs, that enabled
there to be a joint approach at nursery and home.
When it was time for Archie to go to Primary 1, Aurelie helped with an enhanced transition.
When he started attending school, she continued to visit his class and meet with his mum
regularly. His parents found the support of great value and continue to use strategies to this
day.
