Need Some Structure?

A lot of children enjoy running around and playing games during unstructured times, such as playtimes and P.E. lessons. Many also thrive on the competitive nature of sporting games. For some, however, these times can feel changeable and cause anxiety. Losing a competition can become deeply upsetting. These situations can lead to distressing and even some undesirable behaviours. When this happens, it can be upsetting to the child, the rest of the class and to the organiser of the activity.

But there is good news! There are ways to reduce some of the anxiety and behaviour. The key is to make these less structured times more predictable and desirable. When organising lessons such as P.E. and drama, it is important to prepare children for what is coming and this can be done by using a clear and visual structure. This may reduce the anxiety and help the lesson to be more enjoyable. Using a social story beforehand, a visual timetable and a safe space to calm down, if needed, may results in a more relaxed and fun lesson. If losing is particularly challenging, try giving that child a job e.g. score keeper. They will feel more valued and also avoid feeling disappointed when things do not go their way.
